NARS2000 through wine on Fedora12

PostPosted by Jerry Moulder » Mon Feb 15, 2010 11:16 am

I am trying to use NARS2000 on a Fedora 12 linux machine with WINE. When I try to invoke it, I get a NARS2000 info box that says "Unable to find APPDATA in the environment". Any suggestions?

There's a good chance that upgrading to a more recent version of Wine (1.1.38 as of this writing) will solve this problem. Assuming that doesn't fix it, try this:

The description below is from a Ubuntu system which I realize isn't the same as your configuration, but it might suggest a solution.

This error message occurs when NARS2000 looks for and is unable to find the environment variable APPDATA which should be setup by the Wine
environment to point to the "Application Data" directory as it does under Windows. Without this directory, NARS2000 is unable to locate its
initialization file as well as other files. On an actual Windows machine, the path to the "Application Data" directory is

C:Documents and Settings<username>Application Data

Look in the file ~/.wine/system.reg in the section labeled [SystemCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerEnvironment] for
the entry beginning with "APPDATA"= where on my system the entire line contains

"APPDATA"="C:windowsprofilesbsmithApplication Data"

On my Ubuntu system, that translates to the directory "~/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/bsmith/Local Settings/Application Data".

I hope this helps you to get it up and running. Please let me know whether or not this helps so I can provide a Fedora-specific answer to the next person.

Thanks very much for taking the time to try NARS2000.

There is no APPDATA entry in that file. I upgraded and am running WINE at 1.1.38

I should be more specific -- the APPDATA field does not appear in that field. There is no mention of APPDATA anywhere in the fiels. I posted a question to WINE.

Did you ever get a response from Wine? If not and you are using the most recent version of Wine, you might try inserting a line similar to the one I mentioned into that file and see if Wine recognizes it.

I was able to bring the NARS2000, 64 bits on Fedora 11, 64. The application starts up correctly, no APPDATA box on mine, but I cannot type anything in the workspace. I type and nothing comes up. I have not followed up with it, but I'm curious if NARS2000 was tried on 64 bits Linux.

I have not tried that combination as I was under the impression that Wine64 is still in the development stage -- that is, not as yet ready for prime time.
